I really enjoyed this piece by Bruce Johnston on the topic of LinkedIn. He explains the long term challenge faced by network - monetising the hunters (recruiters and sales people) while keeping the hunted (other users) happy.
It's a tough challenge and I think explains some of LI's recent behaviour - certain elements of the recent changes were designed to maximise revenue (which clearly LI is entitled to do) but did so at the loss of user experience. If user experience is damaged too much, the hunted stop using the tool - it's an idea I explored in an earlier blog "taking with one hand, taking with the other".
Interesting to see that LI have already rowed back on some of the recent changes - they walk a fine line and have difficult judgements to make. Enjoy the article.
A precarious tightrope that LinkedIn - and soon Microsoft - has to walk
